gnumeric replacement

I no longer want to have to run gnumeric, because that means I have to run all the cpu cycle sucking gnome stuff. so the real question is : is there another application that will read gnumeric files?

I've already looked at oleo, slsl, nip2, and moodss as spreadhsett apps replacement,

Ideally, i'd like something that will read in the old gnmeric files so I can avoid manually entering a few thousand entries.

Good Editor for sarge without gnome or kde

I like gedit, or bluefish, but these all require gnome bloatware components.

Can anyone recommend a nice editor that i can apt-get install blah for running with icewm on sarge.

completely noob Etch question

Hello, all ...

I've run Debian Sarge (in a server context e.g. no desktop or GUI) on my VIA mini-itx 1ghz C3 box for a few years now, and it's been great. Now, though, I find myself wanting to use it as a desktop, so I installed Etch with all of the stuff.

However, I just bought a larger monitor for it that will do 1680x1050, but I can't get Etch to display anything more than 1024x768. I tried manually editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restarting, but to no avail. Is there a tool that I can run that will re-detect monitor type and max screen resolution? If not, how do I do it myself?

latest Debian and VIA ethernet controller

Hello, all ...

I've been using Debian for a few years now (before that, it was RH / Fedora), and it's been really good to me. However, i've always had problems on specific hardware -- namely, the ethernet controller present on the single-ethernet-port VIA 1ghz Nehemiah boards. What i've seen (and still see with the latest stuff on the 2.4-series kernel) is that sometimes the ethernet driver will work e.g. i'll get an address from my DHCP server, and i'll be able to ssh in, run remote X apps, etc., but sometimes it won't, and the box will be unreachable.

I have 3 of these 1ghz Nehemiah boxes that I use as servers (one running W2K3, one running Gentoo with a 2.6 series kernel, and one running Debian on a 2.4-series kernel). Has anyone else seen this, and if so, how did you fix it?

Why Debian?

My bread and butter is Windows programming but I've been playing with various Slackware, Red Hat (and Pink Tie) distributions for some time...worked on UNIX systems for 5-6 years and I'd like to keep the skills somewhat alive.

Got some work ennui going on now and I've been thinking about playing with some different distributions at home, going back to my roots...which leads me to ask how you all chose Debian as your distribution of choice. The discussion of it in "In the Beginning was the Command Line" sounded great but are there things about Debian that really grab you? If Debian has unique features that are worth looking at I'll check it out; Ubuntu is also sounding kind of intruguing.

Disappointed in download options

So many servers seem to have limited availability of distributions, not Debian specifically but say Mandriva One for example, their site had a broken link (e.g. "Module not found" on the hyperlink) and then I tried BitTorrent and manged to download 1 disc of a 12 disc set which took all night and turned out to be the wrong version.

Has anyone else had a "better" experience downloading a 31r2 or something? Does anyone recommend trying BitTorrent again?

Years ago I ordered Debian for 680x0 Mac and PC on CD-ROM and never successfully installed them either, but that was in the "pre-live" version days. So I guess I am trying to determine the BEST and LEAST EXPENSIVE way to get Linux these days.

Easy question????

I am setting up my small office (four people with XP machines) and am looking at various CRM sortware products. I am leaning toward ACT as I am most familier with it. My problem is the fact that it requires a lot of memory and my p to p wireless network can't handle it. Naturally I plan on changing to a client - server set up to solve that issue. I would like to run Debian on the server and use Samba (?)

My question is this: Can I keep the database on the server and access it from the Windows machines? ACT is a windows based program and works together with MS Office so I'm not sure how it will work. I've only played around with Linux as a hobby off and on for about five years and Debian since the release of Sarge so I'm not much more than a newby.

Alternatively, are there any good open source CRM solutions out there? We are a commercial financing and business consulting company that does a lot of different stuff so it have to be very flexible and easy to teach to employees.

SimplyMEPIS 6.0-alpha1 Linux Release

This is the first Mepis version based on Ubuntu which is based on Deb. I am a Deb Sid user and have tried Ubuntu and Kubuntu as well. I really like this distro and since it is an alpha, it will only get better. This is much better than Mepis 3.4. This is a live/install CD.

For kicks, I took a D-Link DWL-G520 and put it into a system with a NVidia chipset and AMD Sempron 3100 proc. Ubuntu and Deb did not recognise the card, Mepis 6.0A1 did. The download link and a short article is on http://www.mepis.org

Wifi, WEP, etc woes

Mine's an Intel PCI 2100 integrated device. Intel has a semi-official driver project at sourceforge and has made firmware available as well. Built and/or installed these and the device becomes active but I can't get the network connection active. Also, there's a secondary project
that it depends on and they don't build right separately but do when I build an older version where they were integrated.

Tried setting up an old wifi gateway we have with WEP off just to get a handle on basic connecting and using a PCMCIA wife card from my wife's laptop but no more joy.

Patience evaporating...

Debian-specific books?

Say I want to get a really good book about Debian so I can teach myself the details of its package management, idiosyncrasies, etc. Are there any books that members of this tribe would especially recommend?

FYI, I already have various general linux and linux system admin books. My interest may go to light kernel hacking and I'm thinking about becoming am open source contributor.

Touchscreen support

A friend of mine salvaged a 21" NEC touchscreen for me. It's VGA to RGB BNC. It has a USB interface. Works fine in Windows 2K.

Just wondering if any of you have any tips or pointers or workarounds using Debian. What drivers, modules, or packages do you recommend?

Squirrelmail Hosting

I am trying to setup squirrelmail on my Debian Sarge box and wanted to make sure that the default apt-get install location is ok to host from. Squirrelmail installs itself in /usr/share/squirrelmail. I can't remember is this is an okay location to host in my apache config or if I need to move it someplace safer.

Postfix/Mysql/Courier

Let me see if I can explain what I've done so far and if I understand it
correctly.

The server is running Debian Sarge and I've installed Postfix, Mysql, Courier,
and all the dependancies using apt-get. Once installed, I created a database
in mysql as well as the tables per the "how to". The next step was to create
database mappings which as I understand it, provide Postfix with the database
name, username, password, table, hostname, select_field, and
where_field. Then
I edited Postfix's main.cf file to point to the correct mappings. As I
understand it, these mappings provide Postfix with the information on how to
access the mysql database. The next step was to configure courier's
/etc/courier/authdaemonrc file with related mysql parameters.

The /var/log/mail.err shows this:
Apr 12 19:47:34 localhost postfix/trivial-rewrite[7418]: fatal:
mysql:/etc/postfix/mysql-virtual_forwardings.cf(0,100): table
lookup problem

The /var/log/mail.info shows this:

I've read on some posts that because Postfix is run in a chroot environment
communicating with mysql can be a problem.

Any other thoughts? I've double checked all my mapping .cf files for
username,
password, tables.... errors.

k...got it all working, except my screen...the screen is split at the lower third and is repeated once again and only fills 2/3 of the display....the posts tell me to install a different kernel..except i can't find the directions to do this, from the beginnners standpoint...any suggestion?

How can I tell if binutils is installed on my system? When installing the nVidia drivers I get the following error message:

ERROR: Unable to find the system utility `ld`; please make sure you have the package 'binutils' installed. If you do have binutils installed, then please check that `ld` is in your PATH.

hey

ok i have an hp pavilion xt853 with an intel i810e graphics card, i have debian 3.0 and i seem to be having a strange problem.

when i first installed debian xf86 wouldnt run at all, i modified the XF86Config-4 file to use a standard VGA driver and got x started, the resolution was extremly small(about all i could see was an ok box) but my usb laser mouse worked, however when i downloaded the linux 2.4.9 kernel with agpgart so i could use the i810 driver the mouse will no longer work. it seems to be a tradeoff graphics or mouse and its kind of keeping me in shell and i would like to see when the desktop has to offer, could anyone help? if i plug a ps/2 mouse in i can navigate around but that is too much of a hassle because i have to steal it from my moms computer whenever i want to use it

help!!

Hrmm.. ok..

So I did the Knoppix hard drive install. Simple enough. Now I'm trying to install software; in this case Gaim .79 that supports the new Yahoo protocol just for starters.

Do I understand correctly that to "easily" install software on Debian, I need a .deb package? And if that's not avaliable then I can just compile the source code? I downloaded the source to Gaim because there was no .deb and I needed the dependencies.. right.

So I downloaded the dependencies: glib, gtk+, atk, pongo (I think that's it, or at least, it's most of them). I thought I was doing everything right when I un-arked the files, opened a console in the directory and then typed:

./configure
make
make install

The install itself goes off without a hitch (no errors, anyway) but nothing seems to be installing correctly, as far as I can tell. I tried to install glib, for example, and then gtk+ and gtk told me that I needed the latest version of glib which I thought I had just installed. I'll admit, I'm ignorant (not stupid), so what am I doing wrong?

I've also had this problem in Mandrake when something I tried to install asked me to update autoconf and autoconf told me I needed to update automake, then tried to update automake and it told me the version of automake I had either didn't work or was the wrong version.

log rotate configuration problem

I have my server running Sarge with following logrotate configuration:

In my logrotate.conf:

And yet the apache logs are rotated weekly, the web server is not restarted after the rotation and that couses it to loose logs.
Any clues what can couse such behaviour?

What has the experience been with the new 2.6 kernel on debian systems? I updated to the 2.6 kernel but was confuzzled when eth0 suddenly became eth1, and I could not figure out how to swith the ethernet interface in the config files.

Anyone have phpmyadmin experence? I believe I have fubar'd the install.
http://<localhost>:3306 ... nothing but a hanging browser. I have read the documentation once... and will again but, should I be using apache_ssl ?
I'm trying to set up phpgroupware for inter-office chat to replace MS Messenger. (Deb 2.4.18 one recompile, stable, Samba, MySQL, PHP4).

Debian Installs

I haven't done a Debian install for awhile, was looking at a Debian install doc last night, and it didn't say anything about a GUI install program. Is there one? (I've been doing mostly redhat and they went GUI on installs a long time ago.) I'm not against installing from a text screen, just wondering what to expect.

Also, is it (still) really necessary to have a list of the hardware to be installed on. I mean, doesn't Debian have an app invoked during an install which probes/detects a systems hardware (drives, CPU, SCSI, CD*s, scanner, printer)?

Synaptic Question

This may have too many factors to consider to get a workable answer here, but I'm running pretty bleeding edge on my sources, and when I first did my install, I was able to run Synaptic. Now, when I try to run it I get this response:

(synaptic:23758): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

I'm root on a terminal session, and that's what I get when I try to run it. Anyone have any ideas?

Debian/Sparc sunbmac ethernet card.

Last night I helped a friend install debian on a Sparcstation LX with a BigMAC ethernet card. During the install the interface went up fine, connected fine, and we managed to install the base system. After we booted into the installation we recieved

eth1: link down, cable problem?

google turned up nada, just a bunch of old posts about the problem with no solutions. Has anyone here had any experience with it?

Longevity

My Debian server went online on 8/12/99 and has only been down for extended power outages, host shifts, and hardware changes. Average uptime between any drop averages around 180 days and those failures are always external.

Any other long-term stories?
