So many servers seem to have limited availability of distributions, not Debian specifically but say Mandriva One for example, their site had a broken link (e.g. "Module not found" on the hyperlink) and then I tried BitTorrent and manged to download 1 disc of a 12 disc set which took all night and turned out to be the wrong version.
Has anyone else had a "better" experience downloading a 31r2 or something? Does anyone recommend trying BitTorrent again?
Years ago I ordered Debian for 680x0 Mac and PC on CD-ROM and never successfully installed them either, but that was in the "pre-live" version days. So I guess I am trying to determine the BEST and LEAST EXPENSIVE way to get Linux these days.

Re: Disappointed in download options
Wed, July 26, 2006 - 7:55 PMIf you want to try a Debian derivitave distro, try Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu or my favorite, Mepis. All available from their respective web sites. These are all one disk distros. You can go to distrowatch.com to get the links. -

Re: Disappointed in download options
Thu, July 27, 2006 - 12:52 AMI just downloaded the single-disk "desktop" Ubuntu tonight. Works just fine. It's both a live CD and the install medium.
You can download them either directly or via BitTorrent, whatever your preference.
Kutbuntu (KDE), Xubuntu ("lite" x version) or "server" (no X) can be downloaded from the same spot.

Personally, I prefer using Ubuntu for desktop installations over vanilla Debian, but I still run my servers with Debian.

Re: Disappointed in download options
Thu, July 27, 2006 - 4:42 AMYou could always try a netinstall disk (usually about 110 to 150 MB). The Debian Installer page is a good place to check out.
