I am setting up my small office (four people with XP machines) and am looking at various CRM sortware products. I am leaning toward ACT as I am most familier with it. My problem is the fact that it requires a lot of memory and my p to p wireless network can't handle it. Naturally I plan on changing to a client - server set up to solve that issue. I would like to run Debian on the server and use Samba (?)
My question is this: Can I keep the database on the server and access it from the Windows machines? ACT is a windows based program and works together with MS Office so I'm not sure how it will work. I've only played around with Linux as a hobby off and on for about five years and Debian since the release of Sarge so I'm not much more than a newby.
Alternatively, are there any good open source CRM solutions out there? We are a commercial financing and business consulting company that does a lot of different stuff so it have to be very flexible and easy to teach to employees.

Re: Easy question????
Mon, May 8, 2006 - 7:19 AMI have not tried it with ACT but have had good sucsess with GoldMine under Samba. I pulled the Installed app off an XP box and into a Samba share then found the libs the clients were griping about and set them up in the share as well. I mapped the drives so they were always found. That was about 4 years ago and there has not been one problem (other than it's not offically supported by the software vendor :)
SugarCRM is what we have set up for our in house sales staff. Aside from some upgrade hassles it has been a winner in our eyes. -

Re: Easy question????
Mon, May 8, 2006 - 8:16 AMMany admins use Linux file servers for win apps. As long as you can point the app to the servers IP addy, you are all set. I like a setup like this: Deb or FreeBSD firewall -> switch -> desktops and file servers. Since the file server is behind the firewall, you can keep internet traffic out of it. FYI, SME or Deb make great file servers.
